Altea has long been a popular retreat for artists and writers, and with the recent addition of the University of Culture and Fine Arts and a new concert hall, Altea has been given the official title of the 'Cultural Capital of the Valencian region'. The city centre is full of historical charm. The winding, cobbled medieval lanes, are now home to interesting shops, craft galleries and restaurants.
