In medieval times, Denia was known as the Marquesado de Dénia. This name is derived from from the Latin name Dianium which is the origin of the name given to its inhabitants, the 'dianenses'; Daniya was its Islamic name. The city’s height of glory occurred when it became an independent Taifa following the division of the Caliphate of Córdoba during the 11th century. The historical district of Denia contains the city’s symbol, its castle. Nearby, there are Gothic hermitages from the period of the Conquest. Despite its rich history, Denia is also a modern city brimming with culture. Naturally, Denia is an exciting destination for those interested in history and culture.

The fine sandy beaches of Les Marines and Les Bovetes and the shingle beaches of Les Deveses and L' Almadrava lie just to the north, while Les Rotes beach is just a bit south. Most of the beaches in the area are not too big, and tend to be more family oriented. There is also the large natural park, Montgo, nearby, that is home to beautiful vistas and a wide variety of wildlife. The temperature is agreeable throughout the year, with the annual average being 18º C.
