Alcalali village is reached from Exit 63 of the A7 at Benissa and driving through the Jalon-Valley via Senija, Lliber and Jalon. Historically a Moorish village, Alcalali was depopulated in 1609 when the Moors were expelled. The village lies on the banks of the River Girona which has been reduced to not much more than a dry river-bed for most of the year. The economy is still based on the growing of Almonds, Oranges and grapes. The site and smell of the blossoms in Spring are quite spectacular. Fiestas are celebrated in June and August and whilst most people merely drive through Alcalali on their into the valleys beyond, the village can boast a historic church and Gothic tower, both of which are worth a visit.
