The white sandy beaches stretch for over 100 km, and have won the highest proportion of Blue Flag Awards for the quality of water and facilities. In the summer months, the daytime temperature often rises over 30 degrees celsius, often accompanied by cloudless blue skies, and there are plenty of nude beaches on which to enjoy the beautiful weather.
If you get tired of relaxing on the beach, there are many other activities to enjoy in the Costa Blanca region. There are many sporting facilities, with excellent golf and sailing opportunities. Diving and fishing are also very popular along the rocky stretches of the coast. For culture lovers, Costa Blanca has a rich history, which is celebrated with more than 400 fiestas throughout the year. Costa Blanca also boasts a very large amusement park.
Costa Blanca has something for everyone, but its greatest draw is its world class beaches. The sands are white, the water is clean, and the weather is fantastic throughout the year. It is wonder that Costa Blanca remains a popular resort destination for Europeans and international visitors from around the world.
Costa Blanca History, (from 711 A.D.)
In 711 A.D. the Moors invaded Spain through Gibralter and occupy Alicante by 718. Their occupation was to last nearly four hundred years and would mold the landscape of the region. The Moors introduced irrigation and the planting of oranges, peaches and almond orchards. The terraces seen on the hillsides throughout the region are an everlasting Moor legacy. The Moors would not be completely expelled until 1492, when Ferdinand & Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs finally took control of Granada.. In 1095 Spain became part of the North African Berber Empire and for another four hundred years the Moors and Christians would fight over control of Spanish soil. Alicante was gradually regained from the Moors in 1248 by Jaime I of Aragon. After their expulsion, the Moors continued to attack Spain. Between 1500-c1650 Berber pirate attacks were frequent all along the Medittereanean coastline. The first Spanish constitution was written in 1812 and following this the Provincial boundaries were established, establishing the regions including Alicante and Murcia as they are today. In 1923, Miguel Primo de Rivera takes control of Spain as a dictator, eventually forcing Alfonso XIII into exile. The Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939 would divide the country. Alicante and Murcia would remain supporters of the Republican movement. In 1939 General Franco, the leader of the Nationalists would take control of Spain. During the 1960’s and 70’s tourism exploded throughout the region to nearly 4,000,000 visitors a year..
Today, its view over Alicante town and the coastline both north and south is the main attraction for visitors. At the base of the castle, the oldest parts of Alicante can be found in the Barrio Santa Cruz district. Some of the cities finest buildings such as Museo de la Asegurada,( A museum of 20th Century Art), sit among the bars and cafes of the palm lined streets. In the middle of the oldest part of the city stands the Concatedral de San Nicolas de Bari, the city’s cathedral. Built in the 17th Century, it was built on the site of the 13th Century church that in turn was built to replace the cities mosque when the Moors were expelled.
