Tolox is one of the municipalities that make up the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and its natural surroundings, which have been declared a World Biosphere Reserve. The protected area covers 93,930 hectares, and the Natural Park occupies 16,564 hectares.
Tolox is situated in a medium to high mountain area with great elevations (the La Torrecilla peak, second highest in the province of Málaga, stands 1,919 metres) and has very deep chasms. In a few kilometres the altitude goes from 100 to almost 2,000 metres. Its complex topography and the influence of both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic allow a countless number of microclimates that in turn favour the development of extremely varied flora and fauna.
The staus of the area surrounding Tolox as a frontier between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, has over time produced a great diversity of species, among which the Spanish fir is particularly important.
